The AI Era: Why “Unlearning” is our greatest human skill
Lately, the general sentiment around AI is a mix of excitement and overwhelm: “How do I learn everything fast enough?”
But the real bottleneck to adapting isn’t our ability to learn new things. It’s our willingness to unlearn the old ones.
Futurist Alvin Toffler famously said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” Today, this is no longer a philosophical quote but it’s our daily reality.
Here is why unlearning is the hardest, yet most vital, step in our AI journey and why it is ultimately a deeply human, almost spiritual exercise:
1. Unlearning requires emptying the cup (letting go of ego)
For most of our careers, our value has been tied to having the answers and being the “doer” of tasks. AI challenges this identity. When an AI can draft a proposal, write code, or analyse data in seconds, our ego naturally feels threatened. Unlearning means letting go of the pride we hold in the mechanics of our work. It requires the humility to say, “The way I’ve done this for 20 years is no longer the best way.” You cannot fill a cup that is already full. If we hold too tightly to the pride of being the ‘expert’ in our old routines, we leave no room in our minds to become curious students of this new technology.
2. Relearning requires a shift in relationship (From Commander to Collaborator)
We are used to treating software like a vending machine: we push a button, and it does exactly one specific thing. We have to unlearn that behaviour. AI acts more like a creative brainstorming partner than a calculator. It requires us to relearn how to interact with machines. Not as tools we command, but as thought partners we guide. This takes patience, curiosity, and a willingness to iterate.
3. Learning elevates our true human essence
When we unlearn the need to be a repository of information, what is left? Wisdom.
When AI does the heavy lifting of processing and pattern recognition, we are finally freed up to learn and refine what makes us irreplaceable: our human values. We must double down on empathy, ethical judgment, creative vision, and emotional intelligence. AI can generate a thousand ideas, but it takes a human spirit to know which idea matters to other humans.
So, don’t stress about learning every new AI tool that launches this week. The tools will change again next month anyway. Focus on the mindset, practice the art of letting go of outdated mental models.
True agility isn’t about speed; it’s about flexibility of the mind and openness of the heart.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. What is one old habit, mindset, or way of working that you’ve had to “unlearn” recently to make room for AI? Let’s discuss below! 👇
